Manchester United legend, Gary Neville has identified where Cristiano Ronaldo failed during his second spell at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo made a shock return to Man United in 2021 for £12.85 million.
The Portugal captain had a decent first season, scoring 24 goals and providing three assists in 39 appearances.
But things went from bad to worse in Ronaldo’s second season under Erik ten Hag as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was visibly frustrated with his teammates on several occasions and even refused to appear as a substitute once, leaving the stadium early.
Speaking with MARCA, Neville said (via Daily Mirror): “I think he [Ronaldo] did very well in terms of goals. He has a character and a personality in which he does not accept not being the main man. I criticized him because my opinion is that, when you are a leader in the dressing room and you are a leader in world football, there are different ways of teaching, different ways of mentoring and different ways of coaching the younger players on the team who are not at your level.
“I think Cristiano should have modified and adapted his leadership style at United to the players in the locker room who needed mentoring, training and leveling up.”
“Cristiano got frustrated with them, he got angry with them and that was visible sometimes during the games and, in the end, it became a kind of confrontation.”
