Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begum Khaleda Zia, is no more. She breathed her last at 6:00 am on Tuesday at Evercare Hospital in the capital (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un).
The news of her death was confirmed by her personal physician, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain.
At the time, her elder son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, daughter-in-law Dr. Zobaida Rahman, granddaughter Zaima Rahman, younger son’s wife Sharmili Rahman Sithi, younger brother Shamim Iskander, his wife, elder sister Selina Islam, other family members and relatives, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and all members of the medical board formed for Begum Khaleda Zia’s treatment were present at the hospital.
Widely known in Bangladeshi politics as the “uncompromising leader,” the nation has lost a guardian with the passing of this eminent stateswoman.
Her death has cast a deep shadow of grief over the country’s political arena. Her role in the anti-military rule movement, the restoration of democracy, and as a symbol of women’s leadership in Bangladesh’s politics was undeniable.
With the death of the three-time former Prime Minister, an era in the country’s democratic history has come to an end.
