Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begum Khaleda Zia, is no more. She breathed her last at 6:00 am on Tuesday at Evercare Hospital in the capital (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiโun).
The news of her death was confirmed by her personal physician, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain.
At the time, her elder son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, daughter-in-law Dr. Zobaida Rahman, granddaughter Zaima Rahman, younger sonโs wife Sharmili Rahman Sithi, younger brother Shamim Iskander, his wife, elder sister Selina Islam, other family members and relatives, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and all members of the medical board formed for Begum Khaleda Ziaโs treatment were present at the hospital.
Widely known in Bangladeshi politics as the โuncompromising leader,โ the nation has lost a guardian with the passing of this eminent stateswoman.
Her death has cast a deep shadow of grief over the countryโs political arena. Her role in the anti-military rule movement, the restoration of democracy, and as a symbol of womenโs leadership in Bangladeshโs politics was undeniable.
With the death of the three-time former Prime Minister, an era in the countryโs democratic history has come to an end.
