Rivers Assembly to re-screen commissioner nominees today

The Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule will today rescreen and confirm nine Commissioner nominees.

The Commissioners are those who resigned from their appointment in the heat of the political crisis in the state between Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a section of the Assembly led by Amaewhule.

The action of the Assembly is believed to be in line with the eight-point resolutions signed by Fubara, Wike, and some key leaders in the wake of the political crisis in the state, after the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

Part of the resolution is that the Commissioners who reigned should be re-appointed.

It is, however, uncertain if the names of the Commissioners were sent by the governor to the Assembly for screening and confirmation or if the Assembly members are acting on their own.

In the meantime, Governor Fubara yesterday swore in 16 new Permanent Secretaries to handle the administrative duties of the ministries, “pending when the ministries might have a political head.”

The governor also clarified that their appointment was not politically motivated.
