The Community Empowerment and Development Initiative, CEDI, has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to develop and implement strong state anti-corruption strategies, especially in the Oil Producing Area Development Commission, DESOPADEC.
At a press briefing to mark the 2023 Anti-Corruption Day, the Executive Director CEDI, Martha Onose asked the government to ensure greater transparency in the award of contracts in the Delta State Oil Producing Areas.
She said, “We the undersigned Civil Society Organisations and concerned citizens, are urgently appealing to the government of Delta State to strengthen its Anti-Corruption laws and ensure greater transparency in the award of contracts in the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).
She noted the need for greater accountability and transparency in the award of contracts in DESOPADEC, warning that the government must take swift action to demonstrate commitment to the fight against corruption.
Onose at the press briefing was flanked by representatives of agencies demanding accountability in DESOPADEC.
The group advised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to consider the following measures to improve transparency and accountability in DESOPADEC.
” Set up an independent body to monitor the activities of DESOPADEC, including the process of contract award. This body should be composed of respected individuals with proven track records of integrity and probity.
“Require DESOPADEC to publish details of all contract awards in a widely available and easily accessible format, allowing citizens to monitor the process and ensure that contracts are awarded fairly and without favouritism.
” Establish automated Tracking Systems to monitor expenditure and ensure compliance with approved budgets. This will enable timely identification of any irregularities or mismanagement of funds.
“Enact a whistle-blower Protection Policy to encourage employees and stakeholders to report any observed malpractice or wrongdoing without fear of reprisal.”
She said, “By implementing these measures, the government of Delta State can send a strong signal that it is committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring transparency in all aspects of its operations.”
