He’s wasting sitting on bench – Whelan begs Chelsea to allow Blues star leave club

Former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan has urged Chelsea to offload goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, this summer because he is wasting, sitting on the bench.

Whelan believes Kepa should leave Chelsea as soon as possible before his value depreciates at Stamford Bridge.

Kepa became the most expensive goalkeeper in football’s history when he joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao for a staggering €80 million in 2018.

Unfortunately, his stint at the west London club has produced more questions than answers so far amid a run of sub-par displays and inconsistency between the sticks.

As it stands, the Spaniard is behind Edouard Mendy in Thomas Tuchel’s goalkeeper pecking order.

“Players with his sort of stature and price tag cannot be number two,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“He won’t be happy with his place as a second fiddle at Chelsea right now. He will want to feel like a number one again – and hopefully, the club will let him have that opportunity.

“I don’t think the club will stand in his way. Someone of his age and quality is wasted sitting on the bench.”

Kepa has drawn the interest of Lazio this summer and Whelan has urged Chelsea to allow him to join the Italian Serie A club and capitalize on his value going up.

“If he is not going to be number one, Chelsea may as well try and capitalize on his value going up if he has a good season away at Napoli,” Whelan added.
