‘Gang of players, extremely lazy’ – Steven Gerrard blasts AC Milan after defeat to Inter

Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard has hit out at AC Milan after their Champions League semi-final first-leg 2-0 defeat to AC Milan on Wednesday.

Gerrard branded AC Milan as a gang of players who did not play together as a team, adding their performance against Inter was far away from the semi-final level.

Stefano Pioli’s side put in a disappointing performance as Inter Milan won at San Siro, thanks to two first-half goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

“That performance from AC Milan is so far away from semi-final level at this Champions League, it’s frightening,” Gerrard said on BT Sport after the game.

“They looked like a gang of players who were out on the pitch. They didn’t play together. The manager must be scratching his head.”

Gerrard was particularly critical of Sandro Tonali’s failure to track Mikhitaryan for the second goal, as he continued: “The heart of the team was non-existent. Tonali, in this situation, is extremely lazy, allowing a man to run off him.

“The two centre halves, there’s no relationship, there is no communication. Where is the communication and how can you allow someone to run right through the heart of the team?

“For the full 90 minutes, the two centre-backs and the two central midfielders for Milan were so passive and weak.”
