A federal lawmaker from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, has called on the Federal Government to revoke the private airstrip license granted to Bishop David Oyedepo’s Living Faith Church, citing national security concerns.
The motion was raised during today’s House of Representatives plenary session, where Gumi warned about the risks associated with allowing private airstrips, particularly regarding their potential use for illegal activities, such as arms and drug trafficking.
.
Gumi referenced a 2014 incident involving a prominent religious leader and a jet linked to the transport of a large sum of cash, which was seized by South African authorities under suspicions of arms trafficking.
He stated that the current security challenges in Nigeria necessitate stringent measures to control the proliferation of private airstrips.
His words: “The country is facing severe security challenges from the illegal importation and proliferation of firearms, ammunition, and illicit drugs.”
In response, the House has directed its Committees on Aviation and Legislative Compliance to ensure proper oversight of airstrip licenses.
