After sanctions, severed ties, Burkina Faso issues new passport without ECOWAS logo

After the recent sanctions and severed ties with the Economic Community of West African States Burkina Faso has issued a new biometric passport without the ECOWAS logo.

Unveiled by Burkinabe Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, the new passport issuance comes after the country alongside Niger and Mail severed ties with ECOWAS following sanctions imposed on them due to military coups.

Recall that ECOWAS had accused the three African countries of taking actions that undermined the freedom of movement and common market in the region.

However, Sana at the launch of the passport said the change is a realisation of Burkina Faso’s decision to withdraw from ECOWAS.

His words, “On this passport, there’s no ECOWAS logo, and no mention of either. Since January, Burkina Faso has decided to withdraw from this body, and this is just a realisation of the action already taken by Burkina Faso.”
