Tinubu has rights under law to hire, fire – Senators on removal of FCCPC boss

The Senate on Wednesday declared that President Bola Tinubu has rights under the Nigeria Labour Law to fire any Chief Executive Officer of government agencies, including the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Barr. Irukera.

The resolution of the upper legislative Chamber, followed a motion sponsored by Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, citing breach of provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC.

Senator Opeyemi who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District and Leader of the 10th Senate urged the Senate to look into the removal of the Chief Executive and Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC to restore him.

“That the Senate do consider the request of Mr. President, Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the removal of the CEO of FCCPC.”

After contributions by some lawmakers on the motion, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio in his remarks, said, the President has power under the Nigeria Labour Law to hire and fire.

“Appointments of public officers are done under the Labour Law and you cannot force a willing servant on an unwilling master.”

The motion was thrown out following its rejection through voice votes.
