The Power of Words

By Segun Tomori

In my part of the world, some have blindly argued that words don’t matter, that action speaks louder than words, but I vehemently disagree. Words – well crafted, which connects to the very essence of a clan, community, or nation can INSPIRE and rally citizens behind a common cause.

Last night, Vice-President Kamala Harris utilised that great power that is embodied in “words” to not only introduce herself formally to America but galvanise the nation behind her.

We watched a Kamala that was full of grit, assertive, confident, empathetic, and profoundly FIRM. She forcefully projected a stark contrast to Trump that can hardly be faulted – even by the staunchest Trump supporters – in the deepest recesses of their hearts. She marshalled her arguments with impassioned precision and vehemence that radiated through her countenance, evoking discernible emotions on her face.

Harris tore at Trump, prosecuted him before a live, primetime TV, watched by tens of millions in America and across the world – giving verve to her records as a prosecutor. With the audience being the judge, it will be difficult to see the majority of unconvinced voters and independents not swinging to her side.

More importantly, she presented herself as a candidate of the people, their advocate – as against her “demagogue” opponent, reinforcing his only motivation as “he” and himself, ALONE. She outlined his existential threat to democracy in a most compelling manner that evoked deep thoughts about his viability.

Kamala ticked all the boxes, and till now, snippets of the speech still rings through my mind. That is the power of words, and it is no wonder that the scripture says, ” the power of life and death is in the tongue.” With her phenomenal speech, she gave a new life to her campaign, raising the momentum a notch higher.

Barring any unforseen circumstances, Kamala Harris WILL BE the next president of the United States, and we will be here to cheer her onto the white house!

In my lifetime, I hope we can elevate our politics to a similar pedestal – inspire and motivate our citizens to a common, noble cause. Make them believe that change begins with every citizen, inspired from the top, and through that raise a new generation of service driven leaders whose driving force will be” the people, and the people alone.

Yes, We CAN!
