Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai dies at 61

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has passed away.

The 61-year-old died in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025 after battling a long-term illness that had kept him out of the public spotlight for several years.

The official Super Eagles X page confirmed the incident.

The post reads: “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana.

“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.

Rufai, regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, had a remarkable career spanning top clubs like Stationery Stores and Go Ahead Eagles.

He earned 65 caps for the Super Eagles, representing Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups and playing a pivotal role in the country’s memorable 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
