Sowore accuses celebrities of using police against online critics

‎Former African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised what he described as the growing use of security agencies against social media users over online comments and criticism.

‎The remarks were contained in a statement posted on his official X page.

‎According to him, some Nigerian celebrities now appear more willing to involve law enforcement agencies in disputes arising from internet banter, criticism and social media comments.

‎He argued that the increasing criminalisation of online speech, jokes and trolling could pose concerns for freedom of expression and democratic rights in the country.

‎“This growing culture of criminalizing speech, jokes, criticism, trolling, and online banter is dangerous to democracy and fundamentally incompatible with freedom of expression,” Sowore stated.

‎The activist also criticised the Nigeria Police Force and sections of the justice system, alleging that some influential individuals now use law enforcement agencies against ordinary citizens over online disagreements.

‎“The police must stop acting as private enforcers for the rich, connected and powerful,” he added.
