‘See how young he is’: Photos of Senegal’s president and his two first ladies posing with the AFCON trophy trends

Photos capturing the moment Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye posed with the AFCON 2025 trophy alongside his two wives, Marie Khone Faye and Absa Faye, have surfaced online, sparking widespread reactions across social media.

The images emerged following Senegal’s dramatic triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Recall that on January 18 in Rabat, Senegal defeated host nation Morocco 1–0 in extra time after a goalless 90 minutes.

The final was filled with tension, including a controversial VAR-awarded penalty that Morocco failed to convert, as Brahim Díaz missed with a Panenka attempt saved by Senegalese goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. Emotions ran high during the match, with a brief protest from Senegal’s players after Moroccan players removed Mendy’s towel during heavy rain. Calm was later restored, and sportsmanship prevailed as Morocco’s Ismaïl Saibari and captain Achraf Hakimi offered post-match apologies.

Following the historic victory, the Senegalese national team, the Lions of Teranga, returned home to a hero’s welcome in Dakar. They paraded through the streets in an open-top bus as jubilant fans waved the national colours of green, yellow, and red, turning the tense final into a nationwide celebration.

Amid the celebrations, the appearance of President Faye with both his wives and the AFCON trophy drew significant attention online, particularly from observers surprised by the president’s youthful appearance. At 45, Bassirou Diomaye Faye is Senegal’s youngest president, having assumed office on April 2, 2024.

Faye married his first wife, Marie Khone Faye, in 2009. She is a Christian, and the couple have four children together—three boys and a girl. He later married his second wife, Absa Faye, on February 4, 2023. Absa Faye is a Muslim, and they share one daughter.

Both women appeared alongside President Faye during his inauguration, marking a historic moment as the first time a Senegalese president officially served with two First Ladies. The recent photos with the AFCON trophy have since reignited conversations online about Senegal’s political history, cultural norms, and the president’s unique family life.
