Sardauna Foundation expresses concern over situation in Niger Republic

Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has expressed concern over the political situation in Niger Republic leading to the overthrow of a democratically elected government.

This is contained in a statement by Abubakar Umar,
Director-General of the foundation on Friday in Kaduna.

The statement said that restoration of civilian administration is essential.

It said the foundation aligned with the mandate given to the ECOWAS delegation led by Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar and Amb. Babagana Kingibe to mediate in the crisis.

The statement added that Nigeria and Niger had enjoyed a strong and mutually beneficial relationship characterised by shared boundaries, inter-marriages and extensive socio-economic activities.

“This relationship has fostered peace, cooperation, and progress in the region”it said.

It said that “as Nigeria currently holds the position of Chair of ECOWAS, it is incumbent upon us to discourage any resort to military actions against a neighbouring state that looks up to us as a big brother.

“We must lead by example and promote peaceful means of conflict resolution, fostering stability and regional integration.”

It explains that the foundation is committed to supporting efforts aimed at upholding democratic values, promoting peace and ensuring the prosperity of the West African region and Africa as a whole.

It urged all stakeholders to work collaboratively towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the political impasse in Niger Republic.
