Protest greets alleged plan to appoint ex-SARS commander Kolo Yusuf as Kano CP

The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has alerted of alleged plan by the Nigeria Police Force to deploy Kolo Yusuf to Kano as the Commissioner.

The Kano chapter of the body of registered political parties raised the alarm on Monday after an emergency meeting.

Yusuf was a commander of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the notorious police unit disbanded after the 2020 nationwide protests.

A statement by Kano IPAC deputy chairman, Isa Nuhu Danfulani claimed that Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and others lobbied the Inspector-General, Usman Baba to appoint the officer.

Danfulani, the State chairman of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), alongside chairmen of other parties, said Yusuf engaged in a series of rights abuse.

IPAC noted that he was indicted in the case of citizen Abdullahi Alfa who was “beaten to death” by the defunct SARS in Kano under his leadership.

The parties informed the public that Kolo was indicted in suit number FHC/K/H/CS/84/2013 at a Federal High Court in Kano.

IPAC recalled that years ago, leaders such as the late Emir Ado Bayero and the late Bashir Tofa wrote petitions demanding the transfer of the officer out of the State.

The parties warned that his return could cripple “the fragile peace” in Kano and cause pandemonium during elections “because the officer is known for flagrant abuse of power”.

“We wish to thank the present CP Samaila Dikko who will be retiring soon and the AIG for their professional conduct of duties in Kano.

“We reassure of our commitment to cooperate with any commissioner of police with good character posted to Kano, but we unanimously reject the purported posting of CP Kolo Yusuf,” the group said.

IPAC advised IGP Baba and the Police Service Commissioner (PSC) to “carefully select a professional police commissioner to be deployed to the State”.
