Ogun Assembly: PDP members-elect kick over postponed inauguration

Eight members-elect of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have condemned the sudden postponement of the inauguration of the 10th Ogun Assembly earlier scheduled for Tuesday.

Earlier reported that the inauguration was without prior notice postponed a few hours to the set time for no reason.

The clerk of the assembly, Deji Adeyemo, announced the postponement in a WhatsApp message after many had already set out for the occasion.

Adeyemo, who regretted all inconveniences, said the inauguration now holds on June 20.

Peeved by the development, the eight PDP members-elect stormed the assembly complex to protest against the postponement, alleging poor communication.

Within the premises of the heavily secured assembly complex, the members-elect wondered what could have warranted the sudden change in date a few hours before the programme.

Addressing newsmen at the entrance of the assembly complex, Member-elect Olalekan Adeleye from Odogbolu Constituency expressed shock over the postponement.

Adeleye, who warned against an assembly leadership crisis, lamented that no formal notice or letter was issued for the postponement, save for a WhatsApp message, which he said some members-elect were not aware of.

“This is strange. We were in high spirits yesterday, hoping that we would resume here at 9 am for our inauguration.

“To our dismay, we were locked out when we got to the assembly this morning, and when I started asking questions, someone called my attention to a WhatsApp message purportedly sent by the clerk of the House that the inauguration has been postponed to June 20,” he said.

He avowed that there were appropriate ways of communicating such important information to them before it was too late.

According to him, the notice of the inauguration was sent through a proclamation letter written by Governor Dapo Abiodun that the 10th assembly would be inaugurated by June 13.

“If there is going to be any postponement, the governor’s proclamation letter should be withdrawn, followed by another proclamation letter conveying the new date,” he said.

He lamented that the sudden postponement was not the best way to begin the new legislature.
