The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of its associate member and longtime friend, Dr. Jophia Nanker Gupar, who passed away after a brief illness.
In a condolence statement issued on Friday, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, described the late Dr. Gupar as a compassionate, selfless and dedicated advocate whose contributions to the media community and humanitarian causes will remain unforgettable.
According to Ike, Dr. Gupar was widely admired for her cheerful disposition, generosity and unwavering commitment to promoting justice, particularly for women, the less privileged and other vulnerable members of society.
“Dr. Jophia contributed immensely by standing against injustice, especially for the less privileged. She was at the forefront of championing support for women, always backing her advocacy with practical action rather than mere words,” Ike said.
She noted that Dr. Gupar’s passing is a significant loss to the journalism community and the many lives she impacted through her advocacy, mentorship and humanitarian service.
The NUJ FCT Council said colleagues remember the deceased as a passionate defender of vulnerable groups whose commitment extended beyond advocacy to providing practical support and guidance to those in need.
The council also disclosed that arrangements for a service of songs and burial are underway, adding that details will be communicated to members once they are finalised.
Expressing the council’s condolences, Ike said the news of Dr. Gupar’s death came as a shock to members of the union and the wider media community.
“We mourn the passing of our dear friend, Dr. Jophia Nanker Gupar. Her contributions to the media community were remarkable, and her death is a painful loss. While we grieve, we take solace in God’s will. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” she stated.
The NUJ FCT Council extended its heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends and associates of the late Dr. Gupar, praying for the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
