The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has dismissed claims that Christians are being systematically targeted in Nigeria.
Fagbemi stated this on Saturday in Erin-Ile, Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, insisting that no religious group is under persecution in the country.
“There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria. There is no persecution of any religion, sect, or ethnic nationality,” he said, noting that violent attacks occur across the country, including in predominantly Muslim areas such as Zamfara and Sokoto.
The AGF added that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to curb killings, banditry, and other criminal activities nationwide.
“We should reject any insinuation that there is a Christian genocide in the country. The government is taking all necessary steps to address violence and restore security,” Fagbemi said.
His comments follow recent actions by U.S. President Donald Trump, who re‑designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged killings of Christians, further warning of possible military action if the situation persists.
