Nigeria@66: 2027 election will test our democratic maturity – Jonathan

‎Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the 2027 general election will test Nigeria’s democratic maturity, urging Nigerians to prioritise peace, unity and justice.

‎

‎Jonathan stated this in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday as the country marked its 66th anniversary of independence.

‎

‎The former President urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and committed to the country’s unity as preparations for the next electoral season gather momentum.

‎

‎He said, “In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice.”

‎

‎Jonathan said Nigeria had faced numerous challenges since gaining independence but had continued to overcome them through the resilience of its people.

‎

‎He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united while working towards a better future.

‎“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands.

‎

‎“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.

‎

‎“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he said.

‎

‎Jonathan said the country had immense opportunities ahead if its diversity and abundant natural and human resources were harnessed for sustainable development.

‎

‎He particularly urged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous in working towards a country that would provide a prosperous future for generations to come.

‎

‎“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development.

‎

‎“To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come,” he said.

‎

‎The former President, however, said achieving such a future would require greater responsibility from leaders at all levels.

‎

‎He called on leaders to demonstrate deeper patriotism and confront the country’s social and economic challenges through personal sacrifice, good governance and accountability.

‎

‎“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.

‎

‎“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said.

‎

‎He urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and work towards building a peaceful, secure and equitable country.

‎

‎“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
