The Cross River State Government has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies for intercepting a large cache of high-calibre weapons, including three General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs).
The state Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, gave the commendation on Friday after inspecting the seized weapons at the DSS state headquarters in Calabar.
Odey, who visited the facility on behalf of Governor Bassey Otu, praised the Service for the intelligence-led operation that resulted in the seizure of the weapons, including seven AK-47 assault rifles.
The deputy governor said the arrest of two suspected gunrunners during the operation would assist the DSS and other security agencies in tracking down those behind the illegal arms trade.
He noted that if the weapons had not been intercepted, they could have been used to wreak havoc in Cross River State and neighbouring states, particularly during the forthcoming general elections.
Odey also commended the growing collaboration among security agencies and the military, saying the synergy had helped the state government intensify efforts to combat criminal activities.
