Health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations staged a protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Thursday.
The demonstration is in opposition to the proposed Health Sector Regulatory Bill currently before the National Assembly.
The protesting health workers argue that the bill, if passed, would place all medical and allied health professions under the regulatory authority of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
They maintain that each health profession already has its own regulatory body, and warned that the new legislation would effectively make other health professionals subordinate to medical doctors.
The protesters plan to proceed to the National Assembly later, where they intend to present their concerns directly to lawmakers.
