Fuel price hits N590 in Zamfara, transporters hike fares

The removal of petroleum subsidy has seriously affected transportation and other businesses in Zamfara State, with the price skyrocketing to over N590 per litre on Tuesday.

Investigation carried out by newsmen clearly revealed that most motorcycle riders and commercial vehicle owners have parked their motorcycles and cars due to low patronage.

One of the residents, Usaman Tsafe told newsmen that his children have stopped attending schools as he was not able to meet up with their school fees, saying that even feeding has become a teething problem in his household.

“I don’t have money to transport myself to my destination so I now trek to work”, he added.

Some other people interviewed by our correspondent also lamented that even civil servants could not afford two square meals a day due to the harsh economic environment.

Newsmen also observed that many business owners who rely on fuel have shut down as they are facing low patronage.

According to one Alhaji Abba Umaru who specializes in producing ice blocks, the business has gone down drastically as he has reduced the quantity of ice blocks he used to produce.

“People selling pure water and drinks who always patronized me have equally reduced in number because I increased the price of ice blocks,” he disclosed.

This medium reports that there was no queue in many filling stations as only a few vehicles and motorcycles were buying fuel.
