‘Ethnicity, religion not considered’ – Sanwo-Olu speaks on demolition of buildings

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has downplayed the issue of ethnicity and religion in the recent demolition of buildings in the state.

Sanwo-Olu explained that only buildings that contravene the laws of the state are demolished.

Speaking during a live media chat, ‘Sanwo Speaks’, the governor insisted that the demolition of buildings in the state has no ethnic or religious colouration.

According to Sanwo-Olu: “We only remove the structures of those that contravened the State’s building and development laws. We don’t consider the ethnic or religious background of those defaulting our laws. We cannot compromise the laws; we need to rescue the city.”

Recently, Sanwo-Olu’s government was accused of targeting and demolishing Igbo-populated markets and buildings in the state.

The governor was accused of being on a vendetta mission over the decision of Igbos resident in the state to vote for the Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the last poll.

Meanwhile, the governor announced a 25 per cent transport rebate for residents of the state as part of measures to ameliorate the current hardship.
