EPL ex-ref, Mike Dean explains decision not to award Man Utd penalty, Garnacho goal

Former Premier League referee, Mike Dean has addressed two controversial incidents that happened during Arsenal’s dramatic 3-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday.

Red Devils boss, Erik ten Hag, has blamed three refereeing decisions for their second defeat of this season.

Two of them were a penalty incident involving new boy, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho’s 88th minute goal ruled out for offside.

In reference to the penalty incident, which involved Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes, Dean told Sky Sports: “I don’t think that’s a pen. I think it’s just good strong defending.

“They’re both tussling for it and his [Gabriel’s] arms are there but if you look at another angle, Hojlund has got hold of his left arm so he’s kind of pulling the defender down. I’d be more than happy with that decision.”

Garnacho’s strike that was chalked off late in the game, would prove a major turning point.

Casemiro’s threaded ball put Garnacho in to score, but a VAR review deemed he was marginally offside.

Dean added: “His shoulder’s offside and that’s what they’ve given.

“I understand where the manager’s coming from because the angle there is not ideal but we’ve got the technology in the hub to put the lines in the correct position and it looked offside at normal speed.”
