The Edo State House of Assembly has rejected the resignation of its former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, and declared him impeached, eight days after he announced his resignation from office.
Recall that Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, resigned as Speaker on Monday, August 17, 2026, following an alleged threat of impeachment by his colleagues.
Following his resignation, the House suspended him indefinitely and removed the Majority Leader, Jonathan Ibhamawu, and the Deputy Majority Leader, Addeh Emankhu Isibor, as principal officers of the House.
The House subsequently elected Hon. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as the new Speaker.
However, during a resumed sitting on Monday, Speaker Idiaye said the impeachment notice against Agbebaku was signed by 17 of the 24 members of the House.
He said the impeachment notice was formally presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s plenary.
According to him, Agbebaku’s resignation had been converted to impeachment because the notice was neither officially presented nor documented before the House suspended him.
He, therefore, informed the House that Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office.
Daily Trust reports that following Idiaye’s announcement, the Majority Leader, Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, moved a motion for the formal impeachment of Agbebaku. The motion was seconded by Hon. Ahmed Waziri.
The Speaker subsequently directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession.
He warned that security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive or respond to the House’s demand.
