DSS Prosecutes Malami, Son Over Alleged Terrorism Financing

‎The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed criminal charges against former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son at the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations linked to terrorism financing.

‎The two defendants were brought before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik and formally arraigned on a five-count charge. Both men pleaded not guilty to all allegations read in court.

‎Court documents showed that the DSS accused Malami of abusing his former office by failing to act on sensitive case files involving suspected sponsors of terrorism.

‎The agency claimed that while serving as Attorney General, Malami allegedly refused to initiate legal action against individuals whose records were submitted to his office for prosecution.

‎The prosecution argued that this alleged inaction aided terrorism financing and posed a serious threat to national security.

‎In addition, the DSS told the court that Malami and his son were involved in preparatory acts connected to terrorism. They were accused of unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition without valid authorization.

‎Items listed in the charge include one Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 live Redstar AAA 5.20 cartridges, and 27 used cartridges of the same brand. Investigators said the weapons were recovered during security operations linked to the case.

‎The agency also informed the court that Malami had previously been questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over separate allegations bordering on fraud and money laundering.

‎Prosecutors maintained that the offences violated provisions of Nigeria’s terrorism prevention and firearms laws. They asked the court to remand the defendants pending the determination of bail conditions.

‎Defense lawyers, however, urged the court to grant their clients bail, insisting that the accusations were politically motivated and that the former minister was willing to cooperate with the judicial process.

‎However, Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the matter to a later date for continuation of hearing and possible consideration of bail applications.
