Court remands 2 students for allegedly stealing jewellery

An Upper Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Tuesday ordered that two students be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly stealing jewellery worth N60, 000.

The police charged Umar Inusa and Nasifi Lawal with criminal conspiracy, house breaking and theft.

The Judge, Malam Hassan Mohammed who deferred bail for the defendants, adjourned the case until March 20 for ruling.

Mohammed ordered that the defendants should be remanded in the Keffi Correctional Centre, pending investigation.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Yemi Ejagbemi told the court that the matter was reported by Mrs Halimat Joseph of Voice of Nigeria Estate, Lugbe, Abuja at the Lugbe Police Station.

Ejagbemi had told the court that on Jan. 21, the defendants conspired and trespassed into the complainant’s room and stole her gold jewellery worth N60,000.

He said in order to hinder proper investigation, the defendants also destroyed the CCTV camera and the CD in it.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of  sections 97, 346 and 287 of the Penal Code.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
