Court orders PDP to conduct National convention in Ibadan

A High Court sitting in Oyo State has given the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the green light to proceed with its national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Justice A. L. Akintola issued the order on Monday after hearing an ex parte application filed by Folahan Malomo Adelabi, effectively setting aside an earlier restraining order granted by the Federal High Court in Abuja last week.

The new ruling comes days after a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, October 31, 2025, halted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s planned national convention.

The convention, scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State, is expected to elect new national officers for the opposition party.

However, the Abuja court’s decision followed a suit filed by three PDP members, Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP secretary), who alleged that the party violated its constitution in preparing for the convention.

In their suit, the plaintiffs contended that the planned convention breached the PDP’s constitution and due process.

They urged the court to restrain both the party’s leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from going ahead with the exercise.

They also argued that the PDP failed to comply with its internal rules, the 1999 Constitution, and the provisions of the Electoral Act in the preparations leading up to the convention.

The PDP has been in crisis as a result of the fallout of the 2023 general elections, which the party lost to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). Some of the party’s senator has since dumped PDP for the APC citing continous crisis.
