The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has distributed over 600 bags of rice to its members in Abuja as part of activities to mark the Christmas season, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of journalists.
The Chairman of the Council, Comrade Grace Ike, said the annual welfare initiative was designed to cushion the effects of prevailing economic challenges on members while fostering unity, solidarity and a sense of belonging within the union.
Earlier, Comrade Ike, alongside members of the Executive Council, held an end-of-year interactive session with members of the State Executive Council (SEC), made up of chairmen and secretaries of the various chapels. During the meeting, she briefed members on achievements recorded by the council so far, with particular emphasis on the ongoing construction and remodelling of the NUJ Congress Hall. She called for sustained cooperation and collaboration among members to consolidate the gains already recorded.
Members at the meeting unanimously expressed confidence in her leadership, describing it as proactive, pragmatic and performance-driven.
Speaking during the rice distribution, Comrade Ike noted that the gesture went beyond a seasonal activity, describing it as a deliberate demonstration of the council’s dedication to members’ welfare. She explained that the initiative, now in its second year, was inspired by the positive impact of its maiden edition and the need to ensure that no member is left behind during the festive season.
According to her, the council remains resolute in supporting journalists who continue to face professional and personal challenges in the course of their duties, while upholding the core values of truth, accountability and public service.
She also commended sponsors, partners and members of the Executive Council for their support, describing their contributions as crucial to the success of the initiative and to strengthening the spirit of care and community within the NUJ FCT Council.
Comrade Ike urged members to embrace the spirit of the season, expressing optimism that the gesture would further reinforce unity and shared purpose among journalists in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Christmas rice distribution, she said, underscores the NUJ FCT Council’s resolve to prioritise members’ welfare while promoting compassion, unity and collective responsibility within the union.
