CAN laments deadly floods in Nigeria, seeks presidential relief fund

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged the Federal Government to set up a Presidential Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Committee.

The apex religious body said victims of the deadly floods across the nation were in dire need of financial support.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh issued a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

The cleric lamented the number of people displaced, as well as homes, businesses, farmlands, and worship centres damaged.

Okoh said the committee should consist of eminent and wealthy Nigerians, who will mobilise assistance from the public and private sectors.

“Diligent intervention by all stakeholders will reduce the burden imposed by the natural disaster”, he noted.

The leader urged the authorities to design and implement permanent solutions to the flood disaster.

He called for an improved warning system, flood-resilient buildings, and increased spending on flood defences.

Okoh also advised Nigerians in rural and urban areas to embrace planting of trees strategically.

“The authorities should stop at nothing to restore rivers to their natural courses and introduce water storage areas.

“Apart from clearing the drainage, the government should also embark on public enlightenment about citizens’ responsibilities.”
