Aung San Suu Kyi  sentenced to 6 years in corruption case

International desk:

Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to six more years in prison by a junta court on corruption charges. He was sentenced in four cases of corruption on Monday, August 15. Earlier, the military court of Myanmar sentenced him to 11 years in prison for treason, corruption and other charges.

Aung San Suu Kyi was recently transferred from house arrest to a secluded prison in the capital Naypyidaw. He is now participating in the hearing of all the cases against him from there.

It is reported that 77-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi has been convicted anew of misappropriating funds from her foundation, the Daw Khin Ki Foundation, leasing government-owned land at special concessions, and building houses illegally.

Nobel laureate Suu Kyi was arrested in February 2021 when the military overthrew her elected government. At least 20 cases of criminal offenses have been registered against him. Suu Kyi could be sentenced to more than 150 years in prison if convicted in these cases.

However, no media person or others were present during the hearing of his case. His lawyer also did not get a chance to speak.

Foreign Minister Jean Mar Aung of Myanmar’s National Unity Government, made up of politicians ousted in the coup, said the decision was “another act of the junta’s desperate attempt to humiliate the democratically elected”.

Human rights groups have denounced the secret trial against Suu Kyi as a fraud. The closed-door hearing was closed to the public and the media, and Suu Kyi’s lawyers were barred from speaking to reporters.
