Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Oborevwori, deputy, others lay wreaths

Gov. Sheriff Obirevwori of Delta and his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, led top military officers, other dignitaries that laid wreath on Monday to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Cenotaph, in Asaba.

The governor had earlier inspected the guard of honour mounted by the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Navy, and members of the Nigerian Legion.

According to reports, a minute silence was observed while a 21-gun salute was taken in honour of the departed heroes of the country.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day is marked every January 15 to honour the fallen heroes; soldiers who died fighting in various peacekeeping operations as well as those who lost their lives during the Nigerian civil war.

The high point of the event was the release of pigeons by Oborovweri which signaled peace and the people’s determination to avoid any action that could lead to violence or war.

The year’s event included an emblem launch and a special thanksgiving service in memory of the departed and others affected by conflict was culminated with the laying of wreaths.

Other dignitaries who graced the event include, the Speaker, State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor who was represented by his deputy, Arthur Akpowowo, State Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Diai, represented by Justice Kwame Okpu.

Others are Commanders of different military formations in the state, Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, Chairman of the State’s Traditional Rulers’ Council HRM.

Retired Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo, Orhue I, Religious leaders, Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, representative of the widows, among others laid wreaths at the event.
