The impeached Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Ismail, on Monday presided over a plenary session with only eight members, amid tight security.
Recall that on Friday, February 23, 2034, seventeen lawmakers impeached Ismail and elected Bashar Aliyu Gummi as the new Speaker.
The Assembly was thereafter adjourned indefinitely.
Gummi and the 17 lawmakers that elected him to replace Ismail were absent at Monday’s proceedings.
The lawmakers who were present at Monday’s extraordinary plenary described the action of majority of their colleagues as unlawful and illegal.
The Ismail-led faction is also requesting the suspension of the 17 lawmakers, saying that their action has a political undertone and had nothing to do with the issue of insecurity, as they had claimed.
Furthermore, the eight lawmakers are accusing the 17 members of the House of Assembly of receiving money from saboteurs to carry out the impeachment, which they described as unlawful.
