You have no right to detain suspects – Police warn vigilante

The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, have warned vigilante group members against detaining suspects and taking the law into their hands.

The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Abubakar Lawal, gave the warning when he received the state Commander of Vigilante Group of Nigeria in his office.

He said police were very much aware of the contribution of vigilante groups in ensuring the safety and security of Kano State.

“We are very much aware of your contribution to ensuring the safety and security of Kano State. You have to continue with the good work you have been doing,” the commissioner said.

He urged the vigilante group not to take laws into their hands or detain any suspects in their custody.

“You have to hand over any suspect arrested immediately to the nearest police station.”

CP Lawan, however, urged all the vigilantes working in the state to provide useful information to the police when necessary.

He thanked them for the visit and urged them to continue to do the good work they are doing.

Earlier, the Commander of Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) Kano State chapter, Alhaji Shehu Rabiu, said the visit was

to seek more police support and cooperation.

“We need your guidance and support in discharging our duties,” he stated.
