University Don stresses need for teachers, lectures to maintain the integrity of their examinations

A university don, Professor David Kolawole Omole has stressed the need for School teachers and university lecturers to maintain the integrity of their examinations in the discharge of their duties to their students.

Professor Omole who stated this at the 20th Inaugural Lecture Presentation of the Federal University Lokoja, titled “Making the Best of Available Opportunities in Search of Knowledge on a Windy Path’ also said there is an urgent need for a national policy that will strengthen the post UME screening exercise in the higher institutions of learning.

He maintained that the university authorities should strive to improve the integrity of its examinations,
 adding that there should be Comparative Study of the Quality of Students’ Output From Federal, State and Private Universities in Nigeria.

He noted that It is evident that in the contemporary Nigerian educational system, use of tests and examinations remains the common means of assessing the quality and quantity of knowledge dissemination and assimilation in the course of instruction.

“There is need for efficient and effective monitoring and evaluation process to maintain uniformity in the quality of instruction and certification across all university categories in Nigeria.

He added that public examinations poorly predicted university achievement suggests that they may not be good indices for determining or selecting those who are likely to succeed in university education.

Speaking further he said “This process has its strengths and weaknesses that has necessitated the continuous search for the best means of attaining this through researches.

“From the foregoing, it is established that there is ‘No one single jacket fit all’ method in the assessment and evaluation of instruction and programme in education.

“Also established is the fact that the purpose and use to which the assessment result is to be put should be the best determinant of the method and principle to be employed in the process.

He concluded by saying that “There should be a paradigm shift in the notion of “Assessment of learning” to reflect “Assessment for learning”.

In his welcome address the Vice chancellor of the University, Professor Olayemi Akinwimi stressed the need for hard on the part of the lecturers, and commended the inaugural lecturer for keying into the vision of the university.
