Tinubu bestows national honour on Mahmood Yakubu after bowing out as INEC Chairman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has bestowed the honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON on the immediate past chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The president’s media aide Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, said Tinubu has accepted Yakubu’s departure as chairman of INEC.

It was reported earlier that bowed out of the office on Tuesday after completing his two tenures.

Yakubu handed over to May Agbamuche as the Acting National Chairman of the electoral umpire.

Onanuga said Tinubu had directed that Yakubu should “hand over to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will direct the affairs of the commission until the completion of the process to appoint a successor.

“In the letter dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu thanked the President for the opportunity to serve the nation as chairman of the commission since 2015”.
