Shehu links police extrajudicial killings to domestic violence, suggests solution

Social commentator and former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has linked the incessant killing of innocent citizens by trigger-happy police officers to domestic violence.

Recall that the media space was recently flooded with angry reactions from Nigerians over the unfortunate killing of a Lagos lawyer, Bolanle Raheem on Christmas day by a police officer.

Reacting to the incident, Shehu Sani in a tweet on Wednesday said some of those tragedies could be a result of the officer’s mental health which may be triggered by issues with their spouses.

“When a policeman has a bitter quarrel with his wife over money or bills and you send him to the checkpoint with arms, no one is safe; neither the poor in a Bus nor the Rich in a Mercedes”, he wrote.

The former governorship aspirant in Kaduna State suggested psychological, drug, alcoholic and psychiatric tests for officers posted to checkpoints as a means of averting more incidents.

“Policemen deployed to the Checkpoints need to undergo psychological, drug, alcoholic and psychiatric tests. So many people have lost their lives in the hands of armed policemen with any of the above disorders”, he added.
