Senators donate N74m in aid to Borno flood survivors

The Nigerian Senate has donated N74 million to assist victims of the devastating flood that recently hit Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, announced on Tuesday, September 17, during a visit to Borno, representing Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

According to a statement issued by Barau’s media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the donation was a collective effort from all 108 senators, with each contributing N500,000, amounting to N54 million.

Senator Barau also personally donated an additional N10 million, while the Northern Senators Forum contributed N10 million, bringing the total to N74 million.

Senator Barau expressed the Senate’s deep concern for Borno during the visit. “Whatever touches Borno has touched the entire country,” Barau stated.

“We are here to register our condolences and commiserate with you and the entire state over this ugly flood incident.”

The senators were warmly received by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who appreciated the swift response and solidarity.

Barau emphasised that despite the Senate President’s visit on Monday, senators traditionally extend their sympathies individually or collectively.

“May Allah SWT quicken the recovery of the injured persons, and may He make those who lost their valuables regain them as soon as possible,” Barau concluded.

The senators’ donations are intended to provide immediate relief to the affected communities as they work to recover from the disaster.
