Senate clears five new INEC commissioners appointed by President Tinubu

The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The newly confirmed RECs were nominated by President Bola Tinubu in March.

Those cleared are Umar Yusuf Garba, Sa’ad Umar Idris, Chukwuemeka Obeziako, Umar Mukhtar and Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem.

Their confirmation follows the Senate’s consideration of the nomination and marks a critical step in strengthening INEC’s operational capacity ahead of future elections.

The Senate urged the nominees to carry out their duties without fear or favour in line with the mandate of the electoral commission.

The new appointees are expected to play a critical role as Niegria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
