Power outage hits Lagos, Abuja and others as Nigeria’s electricity generation drops to 476MW

‎Electricity supply disruptions affected parts of Lagos, Abuja and Ogun State on Monday as Nigeria’s power generation plunged from 3,840 megawatts (MW) at 7 a.m. to 476.70MW by 1 p.m. Nigerian

‎

‎Data on the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) portal showed that generation fell by 3,363.30MW, representing an 87.59 per cent decline, with the sharp drop beginning around 12:40 p.m.

‎

‎The decline left several major power plants, including Egbin, Jebba, Shiroro and Kainji, recording zero output. Only a handful of generating stations, including Odukpani, Omotosho and Sapele, continued supplying electricity.

‎

‎Consumers in different locations reported power outages on social media between about 12:45 p.m. and 1:20 p.m.

‎

‎However, NISO denied that the incident amounted to a national grid collapse, saying there was no system-wide disturbance.

‎

‎The operator reportedly attributed the disruption to possible localised faults and equipment tripping, adding that its technical team would investigate the abnormalities

‎

‎Meanwhile, electricity distribution companies reported supply challenges across their networks.

‎

‎Ikeja Electric said customers in parts of Lagos were experiencing fewer hours of electricity because the amount of power allocated to its network from the national grid had reduced.

‎

‎In Abuja, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company attributed outages affecting areas including Life Camp Extension, Kado Fish Market and Idu Karmo to a technical fault.

‎

‎In Ogun State, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company reported restrictions on the Ota/Papalanto/Abeokuta 132kV transmission network, reducing the electricity available to feeders serving areas such as Ota, Ifo and Abeokuta.

‎

‎It remains unclear whether all the reported outages were directly connected to the sharp decline in national electricity generation, as the distribution companies cited different causes for the disruptions.
