Policeman killed as unknown gunmen attack House of Reps member’s convoy in Abia

An attack on a federal lawmaker’s convoy in Abia state by unknown gunmen has left a policeman dead, while his colleague is said to be struggling for his life.

According to media reports, the gunmen waylaid the convoy at Ubakala in Umuahia South council area, Abia State.

The convoy is said to be owned by the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North/South Fed Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ginger Obinna Onwusibe.

Onwusibe, who is the chairman House Committee on Financial Crimes, was not in the fleet when the attack occurred.

The policemen were travelling at about 9 pm Sunday when the gunmen attacked the motorcade.

Police sources told Vanguard newspaper that the gunmen dressed in black and wearing police jackets had blocked the convoy, which had the two police men and a driver in a Toyota Corolla.

They said the gunmen opened fire on the policemen after they identified themselves as police officers.

In the ensuing gunfire, a policeman was killed, while the other was injured and is feared dead.

The source added that the gunmen fled the scene as policemen from nearby Ubakala Division responded with gunfire.
