Gafar Asaolu, the personal assistant to former Ogun State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ladi Adebutu, has been detained by the Ogun State Police Command for alleged involvement in an election-related attack.
The incident occurred during Saturday’s local government elections, where Hon. Muhammed Olaitan Efuwape, the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice chairmanship candidate in Ikenne Local Government, narrowly escaped with injuries.
Another victim, identified as Biola, was not as fortunate; gunshots reportedly shattered his legs, requiring emergency medical attention.
Police sources revealed that Asaolu led the attack, which involved individuals masquerading as law enforcement officers.
He voluntarily reported to the Eleweran police headquarters in the company of his lawyer and was immediately detained for questioning.
Hon. Ladi Adebutu, Asaolu’s principal, was previously questioned by both the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police in connection to the violent incident.
“This level of violence during an election is unacceptable,” stated a police spokesperson. “Our priority is ensuring that justice is served and maintaining public trust in the democratic process.”
The attack has intensified political tensions in the state, as supporters of the APC decry the violence, while PDP representatives distance themselves from the incident.
Investigations remain ongoing, with security agencies promising to prosecute all culpable individuals.
The Ogun State Police Command reiterated its commitment to a thorough probe, assuring residents that no one is above the law.
