Police arraign man, 27, for allegedly stealing bags of cement, iron rods

The police, on Wednesday, arraigned a 25-year-old man, Peter Hassan, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing bags of cement and iron rods.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Caleb Leramo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometimes in the month of April 2022 at about 11:00 a.m. at Patmag Company, Ajilosun Area, in Ado-Ekiti.

Leramo alleged that the defendant stole 118 bags of cement, worth N472,000, 12mm of one tonne iron rods worth N420,000, and eight pieces of Y16 iron rods, worth N64,000 belonging to one Mr Ayodele Abe.

He said the offence contravened section 302(9) of the criminal laws of EKiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olawumi Olowolafe, urged the court to grant the defendant bail and promised that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Feb. 21 for hearing.
