Police arraign Benue man over alleged culpable homicide

The Police on Tuesday arraigned one Sunday Nyamkyume at a Makurdi Upper Area Court 2, for alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide and armed robbery.

The Prosecutor, Insp Rachel Mchiave, told the court that the case was transferred from the ‘B’ Division Police Station, Makurdi to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) through a letter No. AR:3100/BNS/MKB/VOL.2/799 dated Oct. 24.

Mchiave alleged that one Moses Twenge of Chivur Kindred, Genabe Makurdi Local Government, reported the case at the ‘B’ Division, Makurdi.

She told the court that the complainant alleged that some farmers from his community had informed him that the lifeless body of one Friday Alaaga of Guma LGA had been abandoned at Akaazua Street Chivur Kindred, Ganabe, Makurdi.

The prosecutor said the investigation revealed that the defendant, a resident in KM 10 Lafia Road, Agan, allegedly killed Alaaga over a breach of a contractual agreement.

She alleged that the defendant had threatened the deceased over his inability to pay off his debt from the motorcycle entrusted to him on hire purchase for commercial purposes.

“On the same date, at about 1300hrs, Sunday Nyamkyume called Friday Alaaga on the phone, lured him to an unknown place, conspired with others, killed him and collected his Honda motorcycle.”

She said during the Police investigation, Nyamkyume was arrested for committing the offences while others were still at large.

She said the offence contravened the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004 and the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act 2004.

Mchiave urged the court to remand the defendant, saying investigation was still ongoing into the matter.

The plea of the defendant was not taken for want of jurisdiction.

The Magistrate, Dooshima Ikpambese, remanded the defendant at the Federal Maximum Correctional Centre Makurdi and adjourned the case to Jan. 26, 2024, for further mention.
