Former Arsenal midfielder, Robert Pirès, has revealed that Zinedine Zidane wanted to replace Didier Deschamps as head coach of France’s national team.

Zidane has never hidden his desire to lead Les Bleus in the foreseeable future.

However, Deschamps has now extended his contract until the 2026 World Cup.

This means Zidane would have to wait for Deschamps to leave the role.

“What Zidane wanted was France’s national team,” Pirès said.

Zidane has been out of job since he resigned at Real Madrid at the end of the 2020/2021 campaign.

“There’s not a lot of clubs that can afford Zizou,” Pirès added.
