Peter Obi drags Deji Adejanyu to court over defamation

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has filed a defamation lawsuit against activist Deji Adeyanju.

The lawyer disclosed this in a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, October 15, where he shared copies of the court documents.

“Finally, Peter Obi has sued me. I’m actually happy and relieved that he didn’t chicken out in the end,” he wrote.

He further noted that the suit was filed in Anambra State, despite Obi “almost always being in Abuja,” where Deji resides.

“But no shaking, we move,” Deji added. “I will prove in court that Peter Obi is corrupt, a bigot, and a fraud. You will all be entertained, I promise.”

In August, Obi had threatened a lawsuit against Deji over alleged defamatory posts.

Obi’s legal team, through EJESIMEN & CO MADIBA CHAMBERS, SAN, said the lawyer had on different occasions made derogatory remarks against Obi via X and other social media platforms, defaming the former governor.

The notice, particularly referred to a post made in August 21, where Adeyanju accused Obi of stealing from Anambra State coffers to invest in his family business.

In the post, Deji claimed that he met with the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and he (Obi) tried to “give me money and called it thank you for coming, it’s 100% true”.

Obi’s legal team demanded a public retraction of the alleged defamatory remarks alongside an unreserved apology from Adeyanju.

However, reacting to the threat in another Facebook post, Deji said he is ready to meet Obi in court.

He wrote, “I can’t wait to meet him in court finally. A fraud parading himself as a messiah”.

Deji, a staunch critic of Obi, has insisted that the former governor may never become Nigeria’s president.

He had severally, clashed with Obi’s supporters, known as Obidients online, following ‘unfavorable’ posts.

On August 28, 2025, while appearing on Channels TV, he accused Obi of offering him a bribe during the 2023 elections and called him a political prostitute.
