Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, is close to breaking the goals record of former Nigerian internationals, Nwankwo Kanu, Daniel Amokachi and Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, after scoring a goal in Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier tie against Sierra Leone on Thursday.
Nigeria came from behind to defeat Sierra Leone 2-1 in the AFCON qualifier at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Two goals from Alex Iwobi and Osimhen helped Jose Peseiro’s men overturn Jonathan Morsay’s 11th-minute opener for the Leone Stars.
Osimhen’s goal against Sierra Leone was his 11th strike in 21 appearances for the Super Eagles.
The goal takes the Napoli star above former Chelsea winger, Victor Moses and former West Brom star, Peter Osaze Odemwingie on Nigeria’s all-time goalscorer chart.
Osimhen is now one goal short of Kanu’s haul of 12 goals for the Super Eagles, two short of Amokachi’s 13 and three behind Okocha’s 14 and five behind Odion Ighalo (16).
The former Lille star is still miles away from catching the late Rashidi Yekini’s 37-goal haul for the Super Eagles.
