NSCDC to Provide Security for Rivers LG Elections as Police Step Back

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken over security responsibilities for the Rivers State local government elections, following the police’s withdrawal from the polls.

The Rivers State Police Command announced its withdrawal on Friday, citing a Federal High Court judgment delivered on September 30, 2024. This ruling barred the police and other security agencies from participating in the polls.

The NSCDC is expected to deploy personnel to strategic locations across the state to ensure the safety and security of voters, electoral materials, and personnel.

The local government elections will take place today, October 5, 2024, across Rivers State’s 23 local government areas.
