Nigeria’s national grid suffers first collapse in 2025

Nigeria’s national grid has suffered first collapse in 2025, barely ten days into the New Year, leaving many parts of the country in a nationwide blackout.

According to data obtained from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), the collapse occurred at 1:56 pm.

The portal then followed with an update: “Restoration has begun. Currently generating 302MW as of 02:40 pm.”

While explaining the National Grid collapse to a reader, EnergyTimePod wrote: “We understand the misunderstanding that could arise from your experience.

“And two truths can coexist. A little explainer here: There are two main types of national grid collapse.

“Partial collapse: This is where some parts of the country still have light even with the collapse experienced.

“Total collapse: This is when every part of the country is experiencing the blackout.

“On today’s development, the grid collapsed around 01:56 pm and we reported 36 minutes later.

“That your light went off 10 minutes after our report does not make it false. On our last check, generation was a little above 1000MW out of the possible 4500/4800MW.”

This incident marks the 13th occurrence in the past 13 months. It collapsed 12 times in 2024.
